さようなら、とこの国の人々が別れにさいして口にのぼせる言葉は、もともと「そうならねばならぬのなら」という意味だとそのとき私は教えられた。「そうならねばならぬのなら」。なんという美しいあきらめの表現だろう。西洋の伝統のなかでは、多かれ少なかれ、神が別れの周辺にいて人々をまもっている。英語のグッドバイは、神がなんじとともになれ、だろうし、フランス語のアデューの、神のみもとでの再会を期している。それなのに、この国の人々は、別れにのぞんで、そうならねばならぬのなら、とあきらめの言葉を口にするのだ。
