日本の一級の芸術の美というものは、それが何であっても、表面に現れているそのすぐ裏側に、死をはらんでいる、秘めていることが特徴ではないだろうか。逆 にいうと、それが文学でも美術でも生け花でも能や舞いや茶道でも、静けさや穏やかさのなかに死を秘めていることを感じさせないものは、一級品ではないので はないだろうか。このことはわたしたちの何を意味しているのだろうと、わたしは時にかんがえる。
